7 Summit Beer and Pie Pairings for Pie Day

It’s National Pi Day!

Did you know, there are actually two annual days dedicated to the celebration of pie? Well, technically National Pie Day is January 23 and the second day celebrates a different type of Pi.

March 14 celebrates the mathematical equation Pi (March 14 – 3/14. Pi = 3.14 – get it?). Though it’s meant for math, it’s long been a day when all things pi/pie are celebrated.

So, since we missed the first pie day, we thought for this pi day we’d share some of our favorite Summit Beer and pi(e) pairings. Enjoy!

Summit Oatmeal Stout & Mississippi Mud Pie

The hazelnut and chocolate malt flavors found in Oatmeal Stout pair well with the chocolate mousse and crust often found in this pie.

Additionally, the chocolate flavors throughout the pie accentuate the cocoa notes in the Oatmeal Stout. The crisper, sharper carbonation of the bottled extension of this beloved dark brew also help to cut the richness of the pie.

Summit Keller Pils & Lemon Meringue Pie

The tangy zest of the lemon custard helps brighten the lemon notes found in this unfiltered German-style pilsner. The sweet honey and melon notes also cut the tartness of the citrus. Meanwhile, the sugary meringue stands in delicious contrast to the clean finish of the beer.

Often served with a light biscuit-y crust, this pie also lets the rich malts of Keller Pils shine.

Summit Triumphant Session IPA & Mixed Berry Pie

Fresh, light and full of flavor a Mixed Berry pie is the perfect pairing for our low-carb, low-cal IPA. The notes of tropical pineapple and citrus grapefruit found in the beer pair well with tart, sweet berries. The buttery crust blends with the crisp, refreshing finish of the beer.

Summit Slugfest Juicy IPA & Cherry Pie

The big, bold citrus notes of orange and tangerine in Slugfest Juicy IPA are a perfect blend with juicy, tart cherries found in cherry pie. The fusion of both fruits create delicious tastes, while the pie crust brings out the sweetness of the malts finishing in a full, smooth sip/bite.

Summit Dakota Soul Craft Lager & Apple Pie

Few things are more American than apple pie and farming! So, it made sense to us to pair our Dakota Soul Craft Lager, made with barley from President & Founder Mark Stutrud’s cousin’s North Dakota Farm, with apple pie!

Additionally, the crisp apple and sprinkle of cinnamon complement the lemon and floral hop notes from this crisp lager, finishing with a light biscuit flavor from the Stutrud barley and flaky pie crust.

Summit Sága IPA & Key Lime Pie

Smooth and tangy, an assertive Key Lime Pie is the perfect pairing for the aggressive Sága IPA!

The tart lime accentuates the tropical notes of pineapple and grapefruit, while also taming some of the bitter hop bite of this IPA. In return, the bitterness cuts through the sweetness of the whipped cream and custard resulting in a sweet and refreshing treat.

Summit Extra Pale Ale & Pecan Pie

However you pronounce it, this pie is a great accompaniment to the classic Extra Pale Ale.

The caramel flavors of the filling complement the caramel malts of our signature ale, while the earthy, nuttiness of the pecans brighten the orange marmalade hop flavors and create a full-flavored sip.
