Summit Lazy Sipper Ale is Ready for the MN State Fair — Are You?

Deep-fried candy bars, carnival rides, Blue Ribbon pickles, mullets of every shape and size — the Minnesota State Fair celebrates all the best things Minnesota has to offer, and that, Friends, includes craft beer.

Once again in 2017, Summit Brewing Company has crafted a special, limited-release beer exclusively for the Great Minnesota Get-Together. And just like the State Fair itself, Summit Lazy Sipper Ale highlights some of the finest ingredients bred and grown in our home state.

Lazy Sipper KegWHAT’S IN IT

A refreshing blonde ale brewed with all Minnesota ingredients, Summit Lazy Sipper Ale features Lacey barley from Rahr Malting in Shakopee, Cascade and Crystal hops from Mighty Axe Hops in Ham Lake, and fresh strawberries from the University of Minnesota’s strawberry breeding program. With complex malt notes of toast, breadcrumb, and graham cracker, Lazy Sipper is balanced by gentle hop characteristics of lemon, green tea, and grapefruit.

“The Fair is ultimately The Great Minnesota Get Together,” says Head Brewer Damian McConn, “so our beer will focus on Summit Brewing’s relationship with Minnesota growers, researchers, and academia.”

WHO NAMED IT

In addition to being brewed with an extra charge of Minnesota pride, our Lazy Sipper also comes with a homegrown name. Back in May, we asked Summit fans to try their hand at naming the beer. After receiving over 520 entries in a single week, we weeded out slightly ill-fitting names like Beery McBeerface, Curd Hurder, and Hair of the Corn Dog Ale in favor of our four top choices: Dan Berry Patch Kolsch, Strawberry Shortkeg, Kölsch Ya Know, and Lazy Sipper.

Over 1,500 people participated in a one-day-only vote for the winner, with Lazy Sipper tallying 32% of the vote for the win. Inspired by Minnesota’s Official State Flower, the Lady Slipper, the winning name was submitted by St. Paul resident Tucker Combs, a social media and marketing professional. He also came out to the brewery in mid-July to help Summit’s Head Brewer Damian McConn in the brew house.
