Date: 6 p.m. Thursday June 8

Location: Hook and Ladder Theater & Lounge, 3010 Minnehaha Avenue, Minneapolis MN

UNDER THE CANOPY: Summit Brewing Co. is a proud sponsor of The Hook and Ladder Theater & Lounge‘s Under the Canopy Series. Starting in May 2023, Hook and Ladder Theater & Lounge will host local artists in an outside venue for in-person concerts.

Indigenous / The Steepwater Band

Under the Canopy will be rockin’ as Native American blues-rock group Indigenous (featuring Mato Nanji) and Chicago rockers The Steepwater Band team up for an electric night.

Mato Nanji, longtime front man of Native American band Indigenous, improves his craft with each record. His playing and singing have never been better as he pushes himself to new personal bests. The group’s music is motivated not only by blues and rock greats such as Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and B.B. King, but also by the social issues and cultural bonds of the Mato’s Nakota roots.

They have won Native American Music Awards for “Blues Recordings of the Year” as well as “Artists of the Year” honors. Indigenous’ sophomore release, Circle, was produced and arranged by Stevie Ray Vaughan’s longtime friend and collaborator, the late Doyle Bramhall, Sr.

Born and raised on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, front man Mato dedicates his latest release Time Is Coming to the indigenous youth and all young people on the indigenous reservations.

In addition to his Indigenous ‘day job’, Mato Nanji has been a member of the critically acclaimed Experience Hendrix Tour since 2002. Playing alongside original Jimi Hendrix band members Billy Cox and the late Mitch Mitchell, the tour roster includes some of today’s blues greats including Buddy Guy, Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon (Double Trouble), Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, and Robert Randolph.

Mato and fellow EHT tour mates David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) and Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) collaborated on the hard-driving, psychedelic blues-infused 3 Skulls and the Truth disc. The album’s no-holds barred setting is the ideal foundation for the three veteran axemen to simply ‘let it fly’

If the old saying about talent equaling success were true, then The Steepwater Band would already be a household name, rubbing shoulders with other like-minded travelers in our collective Rock ‘n Roll Fantasy.

This band leans into it, smiling, with everything in them, not for brass rings and marquees, but because they must! For them, the music lifestyle is a calling and not some stupid costume one puts on to shake loose gold, fame, and groupies. In a land of caricatures, it’s striking to come face-to-face with the real thing. And, The Steepwater Band is the real thing!

“Not only do these longhairs know their Johnny Winter and their Johnnie Walker, they sure as shootin’ dish it out in a nuclear hoedown of dirty fuzztone lead and slide guitar riffs.” Creem Magazine
