Cellar Expansion

Friday, November 02, 2012 , By Mark Stutrud

If you missed the announcement yesterday, here is a message from our Founder, Mark Stutrud, regarding the expansion of our cellar and the groundbreaking ceremony:

We are officially breaking ground on our cellar expansion on Friday, November 9 at 5 pm. Please join us, along with St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, as we toast the next stage in Summit's history. The ceremony will take place during our Friday Tap Room hours*, 3-8 pm. The first 100 people to purchase a beer** that day will receive a commemorative stein to hoist high and say cheers.

Although we have been quietly investing an annual average of $1.7 million into the brewery over the past 10 years, this is the most ambitious expansion since the building of the new brewery back in 1998. The truth of the matter is that we have hit the wall on capacity. The brewery had to cut 12 brews this year due to capacity issues, so the original expansion date of June 2013 had to be moved up to this month. The current capacity of the brewery is 120,000 barrels (bbls) a year. This expansion will increase our production capacity to 240,000 bbls a year. The addition of 7,632 square feet of cellar space and twelve 600 bbl fermentation vessels will be completed by June 2013. We are partnering with some great Minnesota companies: DCI in St. Cloud is fabricating the tanks, our general contractor is Burnsville-based PCL Construction Services, and our engineering/architecture firm is Van Sickle, Allen & Associates out of Plymouth.

We couldn't have done this without you. Thanks again for all the support these past 26 years!

Cheers,
Mark

*We'll have a cask of Old 152 on tap that night, as well as food from Stanley's Food Truck.  The X-Boys (comprised of former members of the Suicide Commandos, The Suburbs, and more!) will be playing in the Tap Room from 5:30-7:30pm, so be prepared to party.
**One free stein per person.  Giveaway starts at 3pm when the Tap Room opens.

Originally named after London market workers who popularized this brew, we dubbed our Porter with a nod to the majestic railway stretching from St. Paul to Seattle. Roasted malts offer up coffee notes leading to a slightly sweet, chocolatey finish. All aboard!

Pronounced “My bock.” As in “Keep your hands off my bock.”

This traditional German style earned the nickname “liquid bread” because it was brewed by monks to help them get through Lenten fasting. Moravian 37 malts and Czech Saaz hops give it a toasted sweetness with a little spice in the finish.

Hold the bottle up to your ear. You can almost hear the polka.

Brewed in the classic Märzen style with Northern Brewer hops from Germany. Rich, toffee malt flavors up front with a clean hop finish as crisp as the autumn air. Unfortunately, like the fall colors, this seasonal beer is gone before you know it.

One taste and it’s easy to see why the Brits call this style Winter Warmer. Nutty, roasted malt flavor with hints of coffee, caramel, cocoa and a dash of hop spice. It’ll warm your cockles. Whatever those are.
